There are two families here. Off-grid systems pair an inverter with a battery bank and panels and run with no utility connection at all; they are the choice for cabins, ranches and homes beyond the line. Grid-tie kits pair panels with a grid-tie inverter and no battery; they cut the bill while the grid is up but, by design, shut down during an outage. If you want both, see the hybrid systems.
